Competition: how many tonnes of waste do UK households generate?

Masterclass: learn more about waste action

Here are some top tips to reduce waste:

  • Avoid impulse purchases - always consider a purchase for 48 hours before committing to it and buy second hand as much as possible.
  • Remember your reusables - bottles, bags and cups! You can often find water points around cities and towns.
  • Don’t overbuy food! Keep track of what you’ve bought and used, and always use a list when food shopping.
  • Utilise the freezer! Batch-cook and freeze portions for easy meals. You can also freeze lots of items - just check the label. Will also save you money and time.
  • Choose everyday zero waste items, like loose vegetables, plastic-free tea bags and ‘naked’ bathroom products like bars of soap and shampoo bars.
  • Prepare to move out - Donate or sell your unwanted items ahead of moving. Eat all the food in your fridge, freezer and cupboards to avoid food waste. Dispose of anything needed in the correct bins ahead of time.
