Understanding College Life: The Relationship Between the University, the Students’ Union, and You
Navigating the structure of the University of York can be complex for new students and staff alike. While the 11 colleges remain the bedrock of the university experience, the way they are managed has evolved into a student-led model supported by the Students’ Union (SU).

The University Perspective: Why Colleges Still Matter
From the University’s point of view, colleges are the primary foundation for getting involved in campus life. Whether you live on or off campus, every student is a member of one of the University's 11 Colleges.
These colleges provide a smaller community within the larger university, helping students find their feet, make friends, and foster a sense of belonging. Historically, colleges were fully staffed departments with their own respective provosts, receptions and budgets. While they now function more like accommodation villages without dedicated, college-specific management staff, they remain the official "home" for every York student.
Day-to-Day Operations: The College Committee
While the University provides the physical space and the overarching collegiate framework, the general day-to-day operations affecting student life are organised by students, for students.
Each college has an elected college committee made up of student members. This committee is responsible for leading the planning and delivery of:
- Freshers week and arrival activities.
- College sport teams, training times and coordination.
- Social events, such as formals, balls, and regular community initiatives.
- Campaigns and representation for college members.
Accountability and the Students' Union (SU)
Although they represent their respective colleges, these committees are accountable to the Students’ Union. In many ways, college committees now operate similarly to student societies, especially in terms of how the SU sees them.
The Students’ Union provides the essential infrastructure for your college to function, including:
- Legal and Financial Oversight: The SU is the charity that takes legal liability and provides insurance for events run by the College committee
- Administrative Systems: The SU provides a digital platform (SUMS) for electing committee members, managing budgets, and selling items such as event tickets and merch.
- Safety and Standards: SU staff have the authority to prevent an event from moving forward if it does not meet health and safety requirements.
Support and Staffing
The model for staff support has shifted in recent years. Dedicated college staff employed by the University have been amalgamated into centralised campus-wide teams, meaning there is less direct contact time with University staff and student committee members.
If committee members require support, they are now encouraged to proactively reach out to the Student Hub or contact the Students’ Union. While "College Councils" still exist as ceremonial groups of academics to satisfy University regulations, they rarely impact the daily operations of the college compared to previous decades.

In summary: You are a member of a University College, your daily experience is shaped by your College Committee, and those activities are legally and administratively supported by your Students' Union.
