College Student Association

College Student Association

The Alcuin College Student Association (often referred to as the CSAC — College Student Association Committee) is the heart of student life at Alcuin. Every student at the college is automatically a member of the association, and its primary purpose is to represent student interests, provide wellbeing support, and organise a diverse programme of social events throughout the academic year.

Unlike a traditional students' union, the CSA is specifically focused on the Alcuin community, ensuring that the college remains a welcoming and active place to live and study.

Representation and Governance

The association is led by an elected committee of students who volunteer their time to enhance the college experience. The committee acts as the formal voice of the student body, liaising regularly with student hub staff teams and the University of York Students' Union (York SU).

Key roles within the committee include:

  • The Executive: Responsible for the overall management, finances, and strategic direction of the association.
  • Wellbeing Officers: Focused on providing peer support, organising campaigns for mental health, and ensuring every student feels safe and included.
  • Events and Activities: Dedicated to planning everything from large-scale formals to casual weekly gatherings.
  • Sport and Societies: Coordinating Alcuin’s college sport teams—ranging from football and netball to badminton—and supporting college-specific interest groups.

Life in the College

The CSA plays a vital role in maintaining Alcuin’s unique "studious but social" character. Recognising that Alcuin is the closest college to the Chemistry, Economics, and Business departments, the committee ensures that the social calendar respects the academic commitments of its members while providing much-needed opportunities to decompress.

Getting Involved

There are numerous ways to engage with the Student Association. Students can run for a position on the committee in the annual elections in Autumn or join one of the many Alcuin sports teams.

The CSA is based in the Junior Common Room (JCR), which serves as the social hub of the college. Whether you have an idea for a new event, need advice on university life, or simply want to relax between lectures in the nearby Economics or Business departments, the association is there to support you.

Constitution

The constitution outlines the way the CSAC operates including committee positions and elections.
