What is Ethical Engagement in Alcuin?
The ethical engagement consists of our Environment & Ethics officer, our RAG Officer, and our Volunteering Officer, who are responsible for Alcuin’s involvement with the environment, charities and volunteering. We work with the College Team to provide opportunities for students and aid Alcuin in gaining awards for promoting sustainability and being eco-friendly.
Some of our previous projects include a clothes swap event, (which ran jointly with Derwent, Halifax, James and Vanbrugh), as well as raising money and collecting donations for IDAS, a women's refuge in Yorkshire. We've also hosted plant pot decorating, and meal in mug tutorials, to help promote an environmentally aware lifestyle. Our college charity this year is York Mind, the leading local provider of services supporting individuals recovering from mental ill-health to achieve outcomes that will progress them towards recovery, social inclusion and integration in mainstream activity such as learning, volunteering, or employment. We also work alongside All Should Eat (click their logo to learn more). Here is a brief statement from them: All Should Eat is a student-led volunteering group which aims to reduce and bring awareness to food poverty in York. We have a variety of food collection boxes across campus, including at the Library & Nisa East, and we’re expanding! In collaboration with your College, we have set up a donation box in your college reception. If you have any spare food (non-perishable, unopened items) or household items to donate, find the All Should Eat plastic bin in your reception/our other locations and support over 70 families in York. We love working with local charities to develop both one-off and long-term volunteering projects for students which will help members of the college gain new skills and enhance their CVs. If you have any questions or wish to get involved in events and opportunities, please contact our Raising and Giving Officer, Ellen Rintoul (emr556@york.ac.uk), or our Volunteering Officer, Emily Mason (em1697@york.ac.uk). |
